I think that bilingualism programs in Colombia are quite far from looking for tolerance and understanding in society suddenly as we learn we can expand the ability to know to improve communication with other cultures and achieving a better coexistence but those with other cultures.

Sadly, the government has focused on teaching languages to meet the requirements of working with multinationals in Colombia or work outside the country because it really learns another language and obligatorily our own cultural becomes in less important.

For example, I am in search of learning English to get a better job as if as future teachers our main objective should be to form individuals who are also of the knowledge receive emotional education that will be what ultimately guide us towards a better society, But the truth is that our economies force us to think about more on the money in keeping harmony in society; In contrast, bilingualism in minority Amerindian or Creole languages has been generally undervalued and associated with an `invisible` form of bilingualism related to underdevelopment, poverty, and backwardness(Mejia,2006). I disagree with the question in the part where it says that being bilingual is helping society to be more understanding and tolerant. I base my opinion on what I have seen and experienced since I have been bilingual. It is true that in an economic way it has helped me a lot and given me many opportunities and different jobs, but I do not see that society is more tolerant or being more understanding, just with the fact of being bilingual. Each day more people see the necessity to learn a new language and people see English as their first option because it is the international language nowadays. But I do not see that being bilingual makes you more tolerant in daily situations and even worse, sometimes people when they know another language became more arrogant with the status that it gives you. The only way that I see to help society to improve their tolerance is to educate people with values and culture that are lacking in today's society.
